Chris McLean is the main antagonist of the Canadian animated franchise Total Drama.
As the host of the show, Chris is in charge of designing challenges for the contestants to compete in—all of which he intentionally makes excruciating and gruesome for the contestants to satisfy his sadistic tendencies.
He was voiced by Christian Potenza in the first five seasons and by the show's executive producer Terry McGurrin in the sixth and seventh seasons.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Christian Potenza's performance helped to make Chris' charming and bombastic personality as remembered as it is. Even when his role was taken over by Terry McGurrin in the reboot, many believed he did a decent job making Chris entertaining.
- He is a thrilling host who made Total Drama as interesting it is, making the challenges unpredictable and interesting.
- Many consider his villainy to be funny, as the ways he makes dark jokes and torments the contestants are done in a humorous way which endears him to the audience.
- Despite his enjoyment towards torturing his contestants, he shows care towards them at times.
- Some felt that Chris' character was rerailed in the reboot where his sadism compared to the previous seasons was toned down and he slightly returned to his characterization prior to his derailment.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Some fans think his sadism comes off as being more cruel than funny, feeling sympathy towards the contestants' misfortunes and feeling that Chris' actions go too far. He also gets away with his most hateable crimes, making many see him as a karma houdini.
- From Revenge of the Island to Pahkitew Island, he became more jerkish and sadistic, often having several mean-spirited moments.
- In "Sunday Muddy Sundae", he changed the rules of the challenge to force Courtney to eat her disgusting sundae. While she had it coming for betraying her friends, many felt that her punishment was too excessive especially since she was criticized for being derailed in the episode.
- In "Lies, Cries and One Big Prize", he turns Jasmine and Dave against Shawn and Sky respectively, causing Dave to lose his sanity and leading to his downfall.
Trivia[]
- Chris' former voice actor, Christian Potenza, expressed that he hated how Chris had become more sadistic (to the point of comparing him to Jigsaw) than he was before due to behind-the-scenes drama, which was one of the factors that contributed towards him stepping down from voicing Chris alongside the false allegations he faced at the time.
