Chloé Bourgeois is a major character in Miraculous Ladybug. She is the daughter of the former mayor of Paris, André Bourgeois, and a rival to series protagonist Marinette Dupain-Cheng. A former anti-heroine, Chloé sheds all of her redeeming qualities and betrays Ladybug by revealing her secret identity.
She was voiced by Selah Victor in the English dubbed version, and by Marie Chevalot in the original French version of the show.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- While starting off as a simple bully in Season 1, she would get fleshed out in Season 2 where she was revealed to have a backstory from being abandoned and neglected by her mother Audrey, and her lack of a healthy parental upbringing made her grow up to be a spoiled brat.
- She slowly developed into a better person over the course of the first two seasons, such as giving Sabrina a brooch, apologizing in "Despair Bear" and saving Ladybug's life several times.
- In "Malediktator", she expresses her insecurities towards having no friends and considering herself useless, making fans feel sorry for her.
- As Queen Bee, she has an impressive design and powers, and played a big part in the battle against Scarlet Moth.
- Despite her betrayal and becoming a full-on hate sink, she gained much more popularity due to having her potential wasted, and her character's downhill turn was due to Thomas Astruc's bias against her rather than any fault of her own.
- Even before her character development she was a funny Love to Hate bully, although this is only true in Season 1.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- At the end of Season 3, she turned against the heroes to help Hawk Moth, before abandoning her chance at redemption to become a worse bully than before. Many believed that she had been wasted as a character despite her arc shaping up to change her for the better.
- Viewers noticed that most of her screentime in Seasons 4 and 5 only serves to make her act like a jerk and often acting extremely dumb (with almost none of the traits that made her entertaining in previous seasons), at the point that it seems that Thomas Astruc is just trying to make her more unlikeable possible due to his bias against her.
- Her selfish actions are always portrayed as being in the wrong by the narrative, even though Ladybug and Cat Noir have also made selfish decisions themselves and have been treated as being in the right. The most notable examples are Ladybug choosing Kagami to deal with Heart Hunter instead of Chloé, not because of anything concerning Chloé but because she was jealous of Kagami's relationship with Adrien, which led to Chloé's betrayal.
- Some viewers feel like the whole fake redemption arc was just useless and that if Zoé appeared and received the bee miraculous earlier nothing would have changed. Thus, many viewers agree that the whole plot of Chloé getting the bee miraculous was just a way for Astuc to rub in people’s faces how much awful she is. Other fans also pointed out that her allying with Hawk Moth could have worked with her redemption arc if the show recognized both Chloé and Ladybug’s faults and had both of them trying to fix their mistakes, but the series doesn’t do this and just uses this to portray her as irredeemable.
- Many of her bad writing can be attributed towards the show's creator Thomas Astruc, who states that Chloé was never meant to redeem from the start and she was supposed to be an example of someone who can't change or be redeemed. He also stated that Chloé was based on one of his bullies back in school, which led her fans to believe that that Astruc was projecting onto someone he hated from long ago to give her as many negative qualities as he could.
- Fans of the show don't like how she's treated as irredeemable while most other characters who did worse than her got away with it more easily. This includes Gabriel, who gets remembered as an hero despite all he did; Nathalie, who is easily forgiven despite having been Hawk Moth’s accomplice; her father André, who despite being a corrupt politician and largely responsible for her daughter behavior doesn’t suffer any consequence besides losing his mayor’s status; Félix, who not only got to keep his miraculous after exposing his own identity but what's allowed to join the hero team despite willingly and joyfully committing a genocide.; Mr. Damocles, who is portrayed as heroic in Season 5 despite having been unable to stop Chloé’s bullying for years and having fell for Lila’s manipulations.
