Princess Charlotte "Charlie" Morningstar is the main protagonist of the adult animated musical comedy series Hazbin Hotel. She is the Hellborn daughter of Lucifer Morningstar and Lilith Morningstar, the Princess of Hell, Vaggie's girlfriend, and the founder of the Hazbin Hotel.
Despite what most of Hell thinks, she believes the expectation of redemption is possible for any and all demons alike and hopes that it will help with the betterment of the kingdom’s over-populace and for better peace between Heaven and Hell.
She is voiced by Erika Henningsen.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- People love her singing and consider it beautiful and energetic, with her singing in particular delivering some of the best vocal performances in the series.
- Fans adore her enthusiastic, bubbly, cheerful, kind and optimistic nature as well as her willingness to reach out to everyone if they want to redeem themselves.
- Fans love her relationship with Vaggie, finding them adorable together.
- Her main design is considered both attractive and cute.
- Her more demonic form is considered to be utterly awesome.
- There are fans who want to see what happens when she gets truly angry.
- She gets to show off her feats and powers by brutally stabbing Adam with her pitchfork.
- Fans appreciate that she is a good bisexual representation.
- Fans of her character give the rebuttal to her detractors' criticism of her overly optimistic, "everyone deserves a chance" mindset by saying she never entertains the idea of Alastor or Valentino redeeming themselves.
- Fans rebut her detractor's critisms of her relationship with Vaggie lacking romantic or affectionate moments by claiming a couple doesn't have to be overtly affectionate.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- Many viewers find her naivete to be infuriating and find her overly optimistic worldview to be eye-rolling, simplistic, and lacking nuance. They dislike how the show barely challenges her beliefs and basically just treats her worldview as 100% in the right. With the characters who do challenge her worldview either being villainous strawmen (Adam, Alastor) or misguided but eventually realize she's right (Lucifer), people said that she is a blatant Mary Sue in their eyes.
- There are viewers who don't like the fact her worldview at redemption essentially allows the most cruel people like mass murderers or rapists theoretically get a second chance, even if this isn't brought up in the show itself.
- Even those who agree with her goal dislike her very naive, childish, and ineffective methods of redemption. They further dislike how the show bends over backwards to praise her methods as "effective" in redeeming sinners when much of the redemption of her Hotel's inhabitants, happen as a result of other characters and their methods. For example, Angel Dust redeems himself mainly through Husk's advice and friendship, not Charlie's ineffective methods. Yet the show attributes Angel's character development to Charlie's help rather than Husk, who deserves the credit far more.
- In the finale, she barely gets to show off her powers as while she does manage to stab Adam with her pitchfork, she is quickly overpowered by the latter and needed her dad Lucifer to save her, leaving fans feeling like Charlie got overshadowed in what should have been her moment.
- She is considered by some to be yet another character with a case of "daddy issues" which many feel have been so overused in the Hellaverse at this point.
- People find her to be underdeveloped and boring when compared to the rest of the cast, who are far more colorful and hilarious.
- There are people who consider that despite being the main protagonist, she is overshadowed by Alastor and Angel Dust, who are far more memorable and popular characters.
- There are people who believe that her relationship with Vaggie lacks chemistry, and it is very boring, since the two have little overtly romantic scenes together and come across more like two platonic co-workers rather than girlfriends, to the point that some viewers didn't even realise they're dating until Charlie directly calls Vaggie her girlfriend in "Dad Beat Dad". Some prefer to ship Charlie with either Alastor or Emily.
- Their relationship is sometimes contrasted by fans with Helluva Boss' healthy and well established official couples: Asmodeus and Fizzarolli, and Moxxie and Millie. Both couples constantly show their love and affection for each other as well as their struggles in a way fans find far more interesting and overt and wish that Chaggie had that same level of focus in their romance as Fizzmodeus or the M&Ms.
