Brian Edward Griffin, commonly known as Brian Griffin, is a major character in the Family Guy franchise.

He is the family dog of the Griffins but mostly portrays to act as an anthropomorphic genius, having the ability to talk, walk on two feet and drive. He has a very close friendship with Stewie Griffin and are often going on adventures with each other. He is also the best friend of Peter Griffin.

He was voiced by the creator of the show, Seth MacFarlane who also voiced Peter Griffin and Glenn Quagmire from the same series and Stan Smith in American Dad.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • Brian was one of the more mature, sophisticated voice of reasons in the earlier seasons.
  • Since Brian is the most "human" out of all the characters, his fans consider him to be very relatable, since he has his struggles as a writer, has insecurities, as well as being the scene of where Brian explains why he keeps the gun with him in case he ever wants to commit suicide. He is considered to be the most relatable dog in cartoon history.
  • Brian has a very strong bond with Stewie since he's really the only one in the family to understand him. They constantly go on adventures with each other, making the two of them an iconic intelligent duo that is very memorable to fans.
  • Just like the majority of the Family Guy characters, he is very laughable, especially with his sarcasm in the earlier seasons.
  • Fans also think when Brian actually acts like an actual dog is funny and adorable.
  • While he does derail into an egotistical douchebag in the later seasons, he is still shown to care and love his family, as he was willing to give his kidney to Peter so he can live a longer life since he saved him from death and he wanted to pay back the favor since Peter is one of his best friends.
  • While most characters often criticize Meg, he is one of the few characters in the family that doesn't usually bully her.
  • Brian's death really broke the hearts of fans in the episode Life of Brian. This made fans want his character back because of how lovable his character is to the point that they started signing petitions to bring his character back.
    • What makes his death more sad to viewers is that Brian died right in front of his best friend Stewie as soon as they were about to play hockey in the streets.
  • He does make good points throughout the series every now and then and does have a right to be annoyed by the people around him.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • In the later seasons, Brian's personality begins to change for the worse. He suffers an extremely bad character derailment, becoming an egotistical, selfish, hypocritical, pretentious, manipulative douchebag who thinks he knows everything, and that he is better and smarter than anyone else despite failing college twice. His bad behavior and ego make him less intelligent than before and begins to show no respect for Peter, or pretty much anyone in general. This dramatic personality change caused his popularity to decline immensely over the years.
  • His behavior got so bad that even Quagmire (who is much worse than Brian), called him out for his awful actions, and explains his reasons of why he hates them. While Quagmire was being hypocritical, all the things he said about Brian are true. While we were supposed to feel sympathy for him when Quagmire said that speech about Brian, it makes detractors have a difficult time feeling sympathy for him.
    • He hits on his best friend's wife Lois, tried to sleep with her multiple times and was about to rape her at one point. Peter saved Brian from death, but he poops all over his yard.
    • His pretentious attitude toward women. He pretends that he cares about their souls, but he just dates them for their bodies and is dishonest about it. The only exception being Bonnie.
    • He does nothing to help out despite his liberal beliefs. Like Quagmire mentioned, he never saw him help out in the soup kitchen.
    • He never sees his son, Dylan, the only reason he contacts him is so he can get further in his writing career since Dylan was famous.
  • As Brian only gets worse, his detractors start going on Quagmire's side and understand why he hates him in the first place.
  • He is considered to be an Author's Avatar to Seth MacFarlane due to how similar their political views are which MacFarlane himself lampshaded before Brianā€™s infamous death, and the fact that Seth uses his regular voice for Brian makes things worse.
  • His detractors also found his death pointless since he came back after a few episodes. It doesn't help that his personality didn't improve after his revival.
