Big the Cat is a recurring character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. As his name suggests, he is a huge anthropomorphic cat, who inhabits the same world as Sonic and his friends and occasionally joins them in adventures. He has a pet frog named Froggy, who is his best friend. His favorite activity is fishing.
In Japanese, he was voiced by the late Shun Yashiro in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle but by Takashi Nagasako from 2003 onwards. He was voiced in English by Jon St. John in 1999-2004 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games along with Oliver Wyman in 2005-2010 and in 2016. However, he was otherwise voiced by Kyle Hebert from 2010 onwards.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He is considered to be somewhat likeable as a character thanks to his jovial mood and friendly attitude.
- He is one of the flagship characters voiced by Jon St. John, a well-liked voice actor known for voicing the action hero Duke Nukem. Funny enough, St. John also voiced E-123 Omega in the Sonic franchise, whose cool and badass character is the complete opposite of Big, with a lot of fans pointing out the duality between the two as a testament of St. John's acting range.
- Even at his worst, Big doesn't come off as fully unlikable. Unlike other Base Breakers in the series, Big is a friendly person whose shortcomings are mostly attributed to his dimwitted nature.
- His love and care for his pet Froggy makes him endearing to the fans and though it may come off as silly at times, there are other instances such as the Metal Virus arc in the IDW comics where it's absolutely heartwarming.
- He is a powerful fighter in his own right, as seen in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Chronicles.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- His mini-game section in Sonic Adventure is infamous and widely regarded as one of the weak links of an otherwise solid game.
- He is viewed as a silly character even by the franchise's standards and he is rarely ever treated seriously or given development.
- His dimwitted personality can be too much for some people, as instead of making him adorable there are times when he is seen as a big doofus.
- He doesn't bring much to the table compared to other characters and his contributions to the story after Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes are minimal, so he comes off as a filler character.
Trivia[]
- While Big's reception had gotten slightly better over the years especially with his inclusion in Sonic Frontiers, he is still considered to be an overall base breaking character with him since he isn't as popular as the other minor characters like Cream the Rabbit and Tikal the Echidna, which he still has a ways to go before he is fully saved.
