Asuka Langley Sohryu is one of the main protagonists of Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. She marks her first appearance in the episode, "Asuka Strikes!" and is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02. She protects the world from the alien threat known as angels with the assist of Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami. Like Shinji, she is a mentally-ill child with issues relating to socializing with people and having inner struggles with her own character. Asuka is incredibly insecure on herself, and her anguish caused her to develop the fake outgoing personality as a method to hide her insecurities.

For English dub, she is voiced by Tiffany Grant and in the Japanese dub, she voiced by Yuko Miyamura. In Netflix dub, it's Stephani McKeon.

What Do People Like About Her?[]

  • Many like her outgoing and confident personality as they find it cute.
  • Asuka has a cute design from her school uniform to plug suit.
  • Like Shinji, she has a deeply tragic backstory where her mother went through an accident from an experiment relating to Evangelion Unit-02. It affected her mind so drastically she develop an mental-illness and confuse her daughter for one of her dolls, leading Asuka to be neglected and receiving less attention from her mother. Her mother later committed suicide with the doll and Asuka witnessed it when she returned home. These events lead Asuka to develop her current insecurities and inferiority complex.
  • Many find her relationship with Shinji funny and interesting to the point of shipping her with him due to their many similarities and struggles.
  • Similar to Shinji, she has relatable insecurities.
  • She is very popular in both Western and Japanese audiences to the point of being viewed as the biggest representative of the Tsundere archetype in popular media.
  • Her death scene is consider as one of the most sad and painfull scenes ever because her evangelion gets stabbed in the eyes with the Spear of Longinus then teared apart by the mass produced evangelions. It is worth mentioning that a pilot of an evangelion feels every single damage of their mechs and even gets its damage. For example, if EVA robot losts arm, then pilot will also lost arm.
    • So basically, Asuka died in a very, very painful way, making many fans sympathize with her even more.

What Do People Hate About Her?[]

  • Despite her deeply tragic background, many of her detractors feel that it does not excuse her overall arrogant behavior in the series, including how she treats Rei and Shinji.
  • Some of her detractors find her personality irritating due to the outburst and complaining she tends to have, despite all being played as tsundere moments.
