All For One is the main antagonist of the My Hero Academia franchise.

He is the founder of the League of Villains who seeks to steal One For All and become the Symbol of Evil, as well as the archenemy of both All Might and Deku. He is also the master of Tomura Shigaraki, grooming him into becoming the new leader of the League of Villains.

He is voiced by Akio Ōtsuka in the Japanese version of the anime and John Swasey in the English dub.

What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]

What Do People Like About Him?[]

  • His overall design is intimidating, even when he restores his face to its past unscarred state, which fans find attractive.
  • He demonstrates his intelligence by ruling from the shadows in the past, knowing how to control and intimidate pawns to do his bidding and planning his escape from prison in advance.
  • He has many Evil is Cool moments throughout the series, showing off his powerful Quirks and always giving his all during fights. He's even the only villain to kill someone during the final war, taking out Stain and seemingly Gigantomachia as well.
  • He is presented as a villainous foil to All Might, with his relationship with his successor Tomura Shigaraki contrasting All Might and Deku's.
  • Because of his involvement with the U.A. traitor, it has led many fans to make theories on who the traitor was before it was eventually confirmed to be Yuga Aoyama. Before that, it seemed like Toru Hagakure would be the traitor until the next chapter proved that it was a red herring.
  • His relationship with his brother is complex and stops him from being too cartoonishly evil. Even in his final moments, he's portrayed as a lonely man who misses his brother.
  • His backstory of growing up as an orphan on the streets along with his brother make him somewhat sympathetic even if it doesn't justify his actions.
  • Some fans like his true personality and think it’s interesting.

What Do People Hate About Him?[]

  • During the final battle, he sheds his composed and intelligent front to reveal his true immaturity underneath, which undermined all of his coolness and magnificence beforehand and making fans disappointed by how he went from being complex to a one-note cartoonish villain who's evil for the sake of it.
  • Many people believe that he was better as a Pure Evil villain than being reframed as pitiful at the last moment.
  • His prominence in the recent arc led fans to believe that he had overstayed his welcome as the main villain, due to how long the pacing of his appearances spans across each chapter.
  • Some fans found annoying that in the final arc whenever he was in the process of losing things started to go as he programmed in ways that felt forced, such as when Spinner awakening Kurogiri with Shigaraki’s hand.
  • Some don’t like how he decided to go after All Might to toy with him and allowing Deku and Bakugo to defeat him, and think that this made the fight with him unsatisfactory.
  • The reveal he gave Shigaraki decay, made his dad abusive and planned his life made many upset, feeling as though it took away the themes of society’s flaws and made everything All For One’s fault, which many feel would have been a much more interesting theme.
  • While some fans appreciated it being revealed that he had genuine care for his brother and was incredibly lonely in his final appearance and was foreshadowed beforehand, others felt that it contradicted with how unsympathetically he had been portrayed up to the point and felt too abrupt.
  • Many fans don’t like him returning after his apparent death, feeling like Horikoshi was overusing him, and many wanted to see more of Shigaraki as the final villain.

Trivia[]

  • All For One is one of the known villainous base-breaking character who was retconned from being Pure Evil to Near Pure Evil because of his abrupt sympathetic quality reveal. Another example is Mohg from Elden Ring.
