Alastor, also known as the Radio Demon, is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Angel Dust) of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel. He is the archenemy of Vox, the boss/owner of Husk and Niffty, and the rival of Charlie's father, Lucifer Morningstar.
He was voiced by Edward Bosco in his normal voice (who also voices Striker in Helluva Boss) and by Gabriel C. Brown in his singing voice in the pilot and is voiced by Amir Talai in the series proper.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- Despite being a former serial killer and being quite sadistic in general, he is a quite charismatic and charming character, which makes many not hate him completely.
- The performances by Amir Talai and Edward Bosco, as well as the song performance by Gabriel C. Brown have been praised.
- His design is considered quite attractive, with that 1930s aesthetic, and the fact that it always has a smile on its face makes him look quite enigmatic.
- Fans find his voice with the radio static cool, so much so that many believe that Vox would have a similar voice.
- He displays some interesting powers while fighting.
- Many people like how scary he can be, like when he dethroned and killed the previous Overlords by broadcasting their screams throughout Hell or when he threatens Vox in "Stayed Gone," making him seem quite intimidating and a threat that should not be taken lightly.
- The songs that feature him are considered some of the best in the Hellaverse, with "Stayed Gone," where he shows how terrifying he can be, and "Hell's Greatest Dad," where his rivalry with Lucifer can be seen.
- His rivalry with Vox and Lucifer is extremely funny, mainly the fact that Vox fails in his plans and Alastor makes fun of him, or also the fact that he is not intimidated by Lucifer despite being the king of Hell.
- Fans love the mystery behind his intentions and have fun speculating on how his goals will align or get in the way of Charlie's.
- Fans appreciate that he is an aromantic-asexual rep and especially like that he is charismatic, energetic, and full of agency; defying the common stereotype of ace rep often coming off as infantilized and safe.
- Even taking into account that he's a villain, he manages to subvert the stereotypes of a villainous ace character by also being very charismatic and full of passion, contrasting the emotionless stereotype often coming with the villainous asexual trope.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Some detractors believed that he isn't that well developed since they thought that he worked better as a villain rather than an anti-hero.
- Some detractors hate how much his fans overhype him and say he's one of the most powerful characters in his verse when he barely has any feats.
- This also caused many to be surprised that he lost his fight with Adam in the final battle.
- Many also see him as overhyped by the show itself. Despite all his build-up as a powerful force, all his accomplishments are off-screen, and his on-screen fights involve him either destroying nameless goons or being curb-stomped by the one actually strong character. This caused some to view Alastor as a "fraud".
- There are fans who do not like his design, claiming it's red color scheme reads as muddy amongst hells red color pallete; does not even remotely look like he came from the Great Depression; his bobcut looks awful and not like anything any men would have in his times; does nothing to represent the fact he's a deer demon besides his rather small antlers; and monochromatic suit design (a common design that fans feel is overused); his noodle limbs and nonexistent waist; overall gives him the impression of a generic "Tumblr Sexyman" twink.
- This also applies to his full demon form, as it's just a larger Alastor with tentacles.
- His radio voice does not appeal to everyone. In the pilot some found it too loud, while in the show some found it too quiet.
- Speaking of voices, many fans were not happy that his pilot voice actor was replaced. Amir Talai's high-pitched voice is said to be artificial and forced compared to the bombastic performance of Edward Bosco to people.
- Many found Alastor's voodoo symbols to be culturally insensitive as they're used to connect with spirits and not anything malevolent. Some prefer he use radio symbols, as that would make more sense to them.
- While his identity as aroace isn't hated in and of itself, some fans dislike how he's currently the only canonical aroace rep in the show and is criticized the fact that he's a manipulative, evil, cannibal serial killer/torturer means that he perpetuates the negative stereotype of asexual people being cold and cruel individuals.
- The fact that an official note from the crew states Alastor "is incapable of caring for anyone more than himself" did not help matters.
- In the show many found his occasional swearing out of character, betraying his well-mannered attitude for cheap shock value. His "I'm going to end your fucking life!" line is considered cringe even by his fans.
- The show does nothing to represent the fact he's a half-Creole black man, with some accusing Vivziepop of retconning that character element into his factor to get rid of accusations of her vilifying Voodoo culture, especially since his Sinner form is white.
Trivia[]
- With Hazbin Hotel still being ongoing, there's a possibility his base breaking status might change in the future seasons.
