Adam Taurus is a major antagonist in the animated web-series, RWBY.
He is the lieutenant turned leader of the White Fang who begins terrorizing humans out of rage for his tragic past, becoming much worse than the humans who tortured him.
He was voiced by Garrett Hunter in English and Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese.
What Makes Him a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Him?[]
- He has many Evil Is Cool moments, such as his design and theme song, that make him almost as memorable as the show’s other villains.
- Many have praised Hunter’s performance as Adam, providing him plenty of emotion and energy.
- Despite having a low screen time, he does have a tragic and intriguing backstory of being scarred and abused for being a Faunus.
- His fight scenes are pretty cool and well choreographed.
- His first appearance demonstrated that he wasn’t always an evil person and was at some point a genuine extremist, which adds to his intrigue.
What Do People Hate About Him?[]
- Many consider his personality following at near the end of Volume Three to be Flanderization, as he went from a mysterious and morally ambiguous extremist who would never hurt another Faunus to a psychopath and one-note villain who kills anyone he wants.
- The story could have kept his moral complexity by showing him as a layered character with clear reasons for his actions. For example:
- His violent behavior could stem from desperation and oppression, making him a tragic contrast to Blake instead of just a "crazy ex."
- His hatred for humanity could come from his beliefs rather than personal feelings, shaped by his experiences with systemic abuse instead of just seeking revenge.
- The story could have kept his moral complexity by showing him as a layered character with clear reasons for his actions. For example:
- Many detractors did not like the fact that Adam was revealed to be Blake's former boyfriend. Not only was this established out of nowhere, but it also portrayed Adam as this crazy ex with a grudge and obsession with Blake, even though Blake said that Adam was more of a mentor at the beginning of the series.
- Critics find his role as a villain unnecessary since the show had Sienna Khan, Adam's former boss, who was already a Faunus who suffered abuse and took it too far.
- The story could have keeped Adam as a lieutenant, making his eventual betrayal of her more impactful.
- Many consider his fighting ability and backstory wasted potential. The former is toned down at the last moment to give Blake and Yang a winning chance, and the latter is only told briefly and isn't explored much.
- Adam's defeat by Blake and Yang should have come from better strategy and teamwork instead of just weakening his skills.
- Keeping him as a strong and frightening opponent until the end would have maintained his mystery and raised the stakes during their fight.
- His rivalry with Yang is rushed and unnatural since the two only interact a few times and have no other connection aside from dating Blake. Many also think that it would’ve made more sense if he was Weiss's rival since her family indirectly caused his past suffering.
