~ Abby before infamously killing Joel |
Abigail "Abby" Anderson is one of the two protagonists (alongside Ellie Williams) of The Last of Us Part II, serving as the main antagonist of Ellie's story. She is a former member of the Fireflies, who leads a small faction of the militant Washington Liberation Front.
Abby is the daughter of Jerry Anderson, one of the Firefly surgeons attempting to find a cure for the infection. His death at the hands of Joel Miller is what sets her on her quest to avenge her father. When she finally fulfills her mission, she comes into conflict with Ellie, who swears revenge after Joel's death.
She was voiced and mo-capped by Laura Bailey.
What Makes Her a Base Breaking Character?[]
What Do People Like About Her?[]
- Some people think that the plot twist of the player finding out Abby was the daughter of the surgeon Joel killed in the hospital is actually genius and well-written.
- Loving or hating the character, everyone agrees that Laura Bailey did an amazing performance and deserves the Outstanding Performance award (especially considering the actress unfairly received a lot of death threats from angry fans who hated the character).
- A lot of people love her interactions with Yara and Lev, thinking of it as a good way of redeeming the character.
- She has a wholesome moment with Yara and Lev where she protects them from Isaac and the WLF trying to kill them.
- Just like Ellie, she has her fair share of badass moments.
- While a lot of people hated it, a lot of others loved the idea of playing as her who is supposed to be "the bad guy" and having her go against Tommy and Ellie who are supposed to be the "good guys".
- Some people think Abby had the most thrilling moments in the game, which included fighting the horrifying Rat King and being hunted down by a vengeful Ellie.
- At the end of the game, while a lot of people wanted Ellie to kill Abby and were mad that she didn't, others took time to bond with Abby and just wanted the cycle of vengeance to stop, and at the end of the day, Ellie and Abby are just broken people who've lost everything.
- She wasn't just a character being pursued by the protagonist, but rather important as she made many contributions that helped push the plot like killing the seraphites, and protecting Yara and Lev.
What Do People Hate About Her?[]
- While Abby killing Joel, who everyone undeniably loves, was intended to present her as a shocking villain, by her cheap means of shooting him in the leg then beating him to death with a golf club, which angered many fans and is basically the reason why they hate Abby so mush, the main point of contention is that the game forces the player into Abby's perspective for a very long time after this cutscene, leaving them to experience Abby's iffy character writing themselves.
- Another plot hole with is that Abby didn't even ask for Joel's family name, so some fans started joking that she'd kill everyone named "Joel" on her path.
- It's also worth mentioning that Joel and Tommy just rescued her and her group, and that instead of showing a bit of gratitude, she decided to kill Joel without hesitation.
- When Joel asks her who she is, she answers "guess", which is dumb considering Joel couldn't even know that Abby was Jerry's daughter. People then started referencing the meme "-You killed my father. -Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?", considering Joel killed hundreds of people and any of them could've been Abby's dad.
- Instead of having her friends remove Ellie from the room, she killed Joel in front of her, which makes Abby's later disbelief at Ellie's path of vengeance even sillier.
- It gets so bad that Abby's actor, Laura Bailey (And her newborn son) is received death threats due to the character's characterization.
- Her detractors think Abby's big muscles are ridiculous and completely uncommon for a woman, and that it's just a way of making "strong women".
- Her sex scene with Owen is found exaggerated and even cringe by a lot of her detractors, and it ended up with a lot of meme edits.
- Incidentally, Owen was in a relationship with Mel; while both Abby and Owen are at fault for cheating, Abby initiated it.
- Her detractors hated Abby for killing Jesse, shooting Tommy through the eye, and beating Ellie and Dina to near death, and on top of that having the player do all of that (which resulted in a lot of players purposely getting Abby killed, most of the time at Ellie's hands).
- She hypocritically accused Ellie and Tommy of wasting their "chance" by killing all of her friends, while she's the reason they killed them in the first place by killing Joel (Tommy's brother and Ellie's surrogate father), and didn't even bother trying to find out why they wanted to kill her.
- What her detractors hate the most about her is the fact that she got away with everything, and that Ellie never got her revenge on her, making her a Karma Houdini.
- A lot of her detractors are sick with the "forced sympathy" around the character, thinking that it's not enough to make someone bond with a character who just killed one of your favourites simply by giving them a tragedy and forcing you to spend at least 10 hours with said character.
- While some people liked it, others found dumb the idea of Abby being the daughter of the surgeon Joel killed in the hospital, with some fans joking that the next game's plot is gonna be about Ellie getting killed by the daughter of a random NPC she killed.
- In the pre-release version of game, it was actually possible to fail QTE in the final battle, which would cause Abby to die. However, this was cut off in the final release, because testers were literally putting their controllers away and doing nothing to defend Abby, in addition to effectively destroying Ellie's character development when she grew to be more empathetic if it ever made it to the final cut.
- Her detractors think that Neil Druckmann wanted to completely replace Joel with Abby simply to make a feminist-inclined caricature, and "lied" to everyone by promoting "fake" trailer material (when trailers are meant to be misleading to some degree) where Joel is supposed to spend the majority of the game alive only for him to die at the very beginning, which sickened a lot of fans.
- While Abby is Neil Druckmann's favorite character, Laura Bailey on the other hand, despite enjoying the game's story, doesn't like Abby.
- Rather than feminism, more logical people suspect Abby is Neil's fetish personified.
Trivia[]
- She is the only Base-Breaking character in The Last of Us and has the largest hatedom than any character in the series (which is ironic considering David, a character meant to be hated, has less haters than Abby).
